Most TVs (and what you have IS a TV) will handle this but you may have issues with getting a one-to-one pixel mapping.# On Nvidia, this is a piece of piss, but on ATI/AMD, it's registry editing some fairly hairy binary strings.

Most HDMI TVs do this (as they are expected to handle 720p and 1080p only), seems you have a 'monitor' which has the electronics of a TV in it. The 'Generic PnP Monitor' driver is just a shim for 'Ask the monitor what it can do' - Your monitor is lying. Your monitor is not advertising its resolution. Thank you all for even thinking about my problem. I don't know what to glean from this except that maybe my monitor type, card type and Windows 8 created a unique situation where it couldn't recognize the correct resolutions of the display. I connected it as a second monitor with VGA I've been using HDMI to connect, but I did try VGA early in the process and couldn't get it to work right, but now as a 2nd monitor it works for some reason.

I then tried connecting my problem monitor as a 2nd display and for some reason it finally gave me the right resolution. So I bought a new monitor today (1920 x 1080) and it worked fine. I even toggled back and fourth between Advanced mode. According to Catalyst help I should be able to affect the resolution from there, but my version wasn't showing the options described. I have been poking around in both Catalyst control panel, and the Windows 8 manager. After a bunch of messing around I did end up using the 1920 x 1080 mode but I didn't like it.
